Shaughnessy: A sportswriting
journey from Groton High to
Gillette Stadium and beyond

From small-town reporter to big-time sports columnist and associate editor, Dan Shaughnessy of The Boston Globe has worked his way up to become one of the most recognized names in New England sports journalism.

Growing up in the small town of Groton, Mass., Shaughnessy discovered his love for sports through participating in them and reading about them.

“I just played everything as a kid, and I’d go down to the Groton library and get all the sports books. There weren’t that many back then, but I was like a little sponge,” Shaughnessy said.

Shaughnessy, 56, got his start in high school as a local sports reporter for The Public Spirit of Ayer, Mass., currently an 861-circulation, twice-weekly paper. Because he was often writing about himself and his teammates, Shaughnessy used a pseudonym throughout his time at the Public Spirit. MORE>
