5-day mail delivery opposed,
would affect N.E. newspapers

The consensus among
regional and national newspaper groups and several New England newspapers
is that the U.S. Postal Service’s proposal to drop Saturday delivery
is unlikely to be approved in the near future.
Were it to happen,
though, it would be another in a series of recent changes challenging
the newspaper industry.
In the newspaper
business, “we have to be versatile,” Robert Shank, publisher
of The Eastern Gazette of Dexter, Maine, said. The Gazette is published
Saturdays and delivers 96 percent of its copies by mail.
“It would
sure affect us,” he said of the proposed change. “We would
switch to Friday delivery.”
The Gazette is not
alone. The Great Northwoods Journal of Lancaster, N.H., another New
England weekly publication mailed Saturdays, delivers all of its newspapers
by mail.
