Doug Franklin has been appointed to replace Mike Sheehan as chief executive officer of The Boston Globe as of Jan. 1. Franklin began his career as a door-to-door newspaper subscription salesman. He spent 38 years at the Atlanta-based Cox Enterprises and was Cox’ executive vice president and chief financial officer when he retired in 2015. He has also been the publisher of four Ohio newspapers, among them The Dayton Daily News from 2004 to 2008, and of The Palm Beach (Fla.) Post, and, beginning in 2009, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Sheehan was chief executive of the Boston-based advertising company Hill Holiday before becoming chief executive officer of the Globe in January 2014. He is leaving voluntarily to focus on his businesses and his positions on corporate boards.

Sean F. Driscoll has become the business reporter for the Cape Cod Times of Hyannis. He has covered Falmouth and Mashpee and the Woods Hole science community for the Times. He has also reported on public records issues, and has been an advocate for innovation in digital and data-driven journalism. In 2014, he launched a nonprofit index that uses public tax return records to track financial data for Cape Cod's 50 largest nonprofits. Driscoll has covered many issues throughout his career, including police, courts, city government, public pensions, employment, and labor. Before joining the Times in June 2013, Driscoll was employed at the Chronicle-Tribune of Marion, Ind., and the Rockford (Ill.) Register Star, and was a freelance writer. He was a 2016 Kiplinger Fellow at Ohio State University, where he learned how to apply digital tools such as social media and smartphone video to data journalism. He has also attended a course on data journalism techniques run by Investigative Reporters and Editors. His work has been recognized by the Associated Press Managing Editors, the Hoosier State Press Association, the Illinois Press Association, Gannett Co. Inc, GateHouse Media, and the New England Newspaper and Press Association.

The Transitions were written, at least in part, from published reports by Bulletin correspondents Nico Hall and Julia Preszler, undergraduate students at Northeastern University.
