Nashua Telegraph,
Milford Cabinet win
top N.H. Press awards

The Telegraph of Nashua placed first for general excellence among dailies in the 2009 New Hampshire Press Association awards competition, and its sister newspaper, The Cabinet of Milford, won the general excellence category among non-dailies.

The Telegraph’s David Brooks received a lifetime achievement award from the New Hampshire Press Association.

The Monadnock Ledger-Transcript of Peterborough won the
Dennis Joos Memorial Award, given for "a unique journalism effort in covering an event or issue of unusual significance to the newspaper’s readers." The award memorializes an editor for The News & Sentinel of Colebrook who was killed in August 1997 when he tried to disarm a man who had killed two state troopers and a judge before police shot him to death.

The Ledger-Transcript also won special recognition for community journalism/relevance among non-dailies. The Keene Sentinel won that recognition among dailies.

Among awards for individual distinction, Marty Karlon of the Cabinet was named editorial writer of the year for non-dailies, and Jim Fox of the Valley News of Lebanon for dailies; George Maidrand of The Contoocook Valley Villager of Hillsborough was recognized as columnist of the year for non-dailies, and Katy Burns of the Concord Monitor for dailies; Kathy Cleveland of the Cabinet placed first for writer of the year among non-dailies, and Don Mahler of the Valley News was first in that category for dailies.

Also, Josh Bond of the Ledger-Transcript was honored as rookie of the year among non-dailies, and Karen Langley of the Concord Monitor for dailies; James Patterson was named photographer of the year for dailies; and Trent Spiner won an award for freelancer of the year.

The awards dinner was held Oct. 9 at the Holiday Inn in Concord, N.H.

This photo of a 9-year-old student at a Rindge, N.H., school jokingly
grimacing as a king snake creeps near her face during a presentation
of rain forest critters won a first-place award for general news photo for
Michael Moore of the Keene (N.H.) Sentinel.

This report was prepared with information from the New Hampshire Press Association by Cecilia Akuffo, a graduate student at the Northeastern University School of Journalism and member of the Bulletin staff.
